(Kopp was convicted in 2003 of killing Slepian and is serving a sentence of 25 years to life.) A chartered jet crashed near Aspen, Colo., killing all 18 people aboard. Pianist John Lewis, who masterminded the Modern Jazz Quartet, died in New York at age 80.

One year ago: As     Terri Schiavo entered her 12th full day without food or water, the Rev.     Jesse Jackson prayed with her parents and joined conservatives in calling for Florida lawmakers to order her feeding tube reinserted. Attorney Johnnie L. Cochran Jr. died in Los Angeles at age 67. Former U.S. Sen. Howell Heflin died in Sheffield, Ala., at age 83.
