China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 728.HK) and China Netcom (NYSE: CN; 906.HK) announced on December 28 that some websites outside of the Mainland are now accessible to mainland China users with the help of satellites and European land route optical networks, reports Sina. The earthquake that took place in Taiwan on Tuesday damaged at least six of the Mainland's optical networks leading out of China, which caused difficulties for the China's Internet users to visit websites outside the Mainland. The report said that it will take more than ten days for China Telecom and China Netcom to repair the damaged optical networks. Around 15 million Internet users in China could not sign in MSN messenger on Wednesday, report Oriental Morning Post. Tencent's QQ benefited slightly on Wednesday, recording a PCU of nearly 22.5 million, but still short of the record of 24.5 million PCU. According to Sina's recent survey, 60 percent of Internet users in China felt that their work or life has been affected by the optical network damage.
